How does FirstNet support disaster response?
Agencies on FirstNet that need enhanced communications for an emergency can request support through FirstNet Central. ROG, a team led by former first responders, helps identify the solutions you need and deploys to support public safety. This allows first responders to communicate and coordinate their emergency response, or aid in recovery, even in the hardest-hit or most remote areas of the country. This team sets FirstNet apart from commercial networks.
What type of FirstNet deployables does ROG provide?
ROG manages the deployment of more than 190 dedicated deployable network assets, including Satellite Cells on Light Trucks (SatCOLTs) and Cells on Wheels (COWs). These mobile cell sites link to FirstNet via satellite. They don’t rely on commercial power availability and provide first responders with connectivity capabilities, much like a cell tower.
How fast can the Response Operations Group deploy FirstNet deployables in an emergency?
For the SatCOLTs and COWs, FirstNet follows a 14-hour (or less) delivery objective following the initial emergency request. ROG will evaluate and prioritize requests from public safety agencies on FirstNet, based on National Incident Management System principles.
How can public safety agencies request FirstNet deployables?
Deployables are available to all FirstNet agencies and can be requested by contacting your FirstNet specialist or through FirstNet Central. Alternatively, you can call FirstNet care team at 800.574.7000 and say deployable when prompted.
How does FirstNet maintain a high level of network security during emergencies and planned events?
FirstNet is designed with a defense-in-depth strategy that goes well beyond standard commercial network security measures. No matter how you connect—through cell sites or deployable network assets—FirstNet sends data through the dedicated network core. A dedicated Security Operations Center monitors this traffic at all times, focused solely on protecting public safety’s critical communications. This keeps the network safe without sacrificing usability or impacting public safety’s missions.
Can ROG offer support for incidents that are not emergency or disaster-related?
Yes, ROG supports FirstNet customers wherever their mission takes them. FirstNet has supported national sporting events like the Final Four in San Antonio and pro football's championship game. Additionally, FirstNet can provide on-site and remote technical support for agencies as they gear up for community festivals, concerts, agency exercises and more.
