Frequently asked questions

Learn more about FirstNet and your trusted network

FirstNet is the only nationwide high-speed broadband communications platform built with and for America’s first responders and the public safety community. This reliable, highly-secure communications platform brings public safety agencies and first responders the prioritized connectivity they need to help them keep themselves and their communities safe. Public safety’s sensitive communications are routed through a dedicated evolved packet core, so they never have to compete with commercial traffic.

FirstNet provides America’s first responders with the highly secure and reliable connectivity they need, when they need it – whether in a crisis or a routine task. FirstNet users have access to all AT&T LTE commercial bands, as well as Band 14 spectrum. We look at Band 14 as public safety’s VIP lane. This is the nationwide, high-quality spectrum set aside by the U.S. government specifically for public safety.

During an emergency, this band – or lane – can be cleared and locked exclusively first responders and the public safety community. That means only those on FirstNet will be able to access Band 14 spectrum, further elevating their connected experience and emergency response.

The public safety community on FirstNet now has access to the nation’s largest coverage footprint, reaching more than 2.97 million square miles across the country – 250,000 square miles more than any other commercial networks. With Band 14 and AT&T commercial bands, FirstNet covers over 99% of the U.S. population.
