With public safety, for public safety
FirstNet grew out of the devastating losses from the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The attacks exposed glaring weaknesses in our communications systems. Emergency response teams could not communicate, and many first responders lost their lives. So, the 9/11 Commission recommended the creation of a single, interoperable network for first responders. And public safety organizations lobbied Congress for years to make it a reality.
In 2012, Congress established the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority) and charged it with overseeing the buildout, deployment and operation of FirstNet – the nation’s public safety broadband network. This included direct input from every public safety discipline across all 50 states, 5 territories and the District of Columbia, a distinction that makes FirstNet unique in American telecommunications history.
The FirstNet Authority partnered with AT&T to bring FirstNet to life, giving this vital community an entire program dedicated to supporting your critical communications in any emergency. FirstNet is your network – built with and for you – delivering the lifesaving technologies you need to keep yourself and your communities safe.
